At the beginning of 2005, Next requested Advance to review its current light box design and provide them with a revised solution that would include:
.
- Updated design to make the product more ‘user friendly’ and adaptable
- Improved energy efficiency with reduced operating costs
.
The design brief involved re-designing their current 1100mm square light box to reduce its overall depth, but without creating the ‘striping’ effect. In addition to this a major consideration was to ensure the ease of changing the images within the light box, therefore making it more user friendly.
.
.
To improve the efficiency of the product high frequency electronic ballasts were specified. These ballasts use 30% less power than the electromagnetic chokes that were in the previous design. In addition to this, the ‘warm start’ nature of the electronics meant that the lamp life was improved by up to 80%, resulting in much reduced maintenance costs to replace lamps.
.
Careful selection of lamps and design of the opal fronts of the light box ensured that ‘striping’ was eliminated, even though the depth of the light box was reduced. The resulting design changes have produced slimmer and brighter light boxes that will save Next on maintenance and service costs over 5 years.
